Threshold variations

By the end of this a bigger cheer, gift bomb, raid or tip fires its own louder alert, with its own line, art, sound and colour.

What a variation is

Every event in Per-event settings ends with a Bigger versions list. Each entry there is a complete second version of that alert, switched on by a number. Add one with Add threshold. You get five per event, which with the event's own settings makes six versions of one alert.

The fields on a variation

  • From - the smallest number this version covers. 0 to 10,000,000.
  • Text - your line, up to 140 characters, tokens and all.
  • Image or GIF - an upload, or an https link.
  • Sound - built in, uploaded, or a link.
  • Accent - the colour this version paints in.

The highest matching threshold wins

When an event arrives, pulz collects every variation whose From is less than or equal to the event's number, then keeps the one with the highest From. Nothing else about the list matters - not the order you added them in, not whether they are sorted, not how many there are.

Say a Cheer has three variations, From 100, 1000 and 5000:

  • A 50-bit cheer matches none of them and uses the event's own settings.
  • A 100-bit cheer matches the first, and uses it.
  • A 4,999-bit cheer matches the first two, and From 1000 wins.
  • A 50,000-bit cheer matches all three, and From 5000 wins.

Empty fields fall back

A variation only has to fill in what you want different. Every field you leave empty falls through:

  • Text, Image or GIF and Accent fall back to the event's own settings.
  • Sound falls back to the event's sound, and then to the widget's Default sound.
  • An Accent left empty everywhere falls back to the widget's accent, which falls back to your page theme.

So a variation that sets only a sound keeps the same line and the same art, and changes nothing but what you hear. That is often the whole change you want.

Only above runs first

Only above on the event itself is a separate gate, checked before any variation is considered. If the event's number is below it, no alert fires at all.

What the number is, per event

A threshold compares against the one number the event carries:

  • Cheer - bits.
  • Gifted subs - how many subs were gifted, the whole bomb counted once.
  • Raid - how many viewers came with it.
  • Tip or donation - the amount, exactly as the tip was sent.
  • Resub - total months subscribed.
  • Channel point redemption - the reward's cost in points.
  • Hype train - the level the train finished on.
  • New follower and New subscriber - no number at all, so they count as 0.

Testing a threshold

A test alert uses fixed sample data, not your real history, so build your first threshold under the sample number if you want to see it fire:

  • Cheer - 500 bits, from gigachad99.
  • Gifted subs - 5 subs, from mysterymvp.
  • Raid - 42 viewers, from cozycasts.
  • Tip or donation - 25, from anon_tipper.
  • Resub - 12 months and a 4-month streak, from lofilena.
  • Hype train - level 3.
  • Channel point redemption - Hydrate reminder, from clip_it, with no cost, so it counts as 0.
  • New follower - pixeldrift. New subscriber - night_owl at Tier 1.
  1. Open Stream Control in your dashboard.
  2. Pick the event under Alert type, then click Test alert.
  3. Watch the browser source, or the preview in the editor.A variation set to From 1000 will not appear on a 500-bit test cheer. Drop it to 100 to check the wiring, then put it back.

FAQ

How many variations can one event have?

Five. The Add threshold button greys out once you reach it.

Do I have to keep them in order?

No. pulz picks the highest matching From whatever order the rows are in. Order only decides a tie between two rows sharing a number.

Can a variation stop an alert firing?

No. Suppressing an event is Only above, or the event's Enabled switch. A variation only ever changes how an alert looks and sounds.

Can a big alert stay on screen longer?

Not per variation. Seconds on screen is one setting for the whole widget, so every alert holds for the same time.

Can I give a variation its own skin or motion?

No. Skin and motion are set once on the widget. A variation changes the text, the art, the sound and the accent colour.
