Where a sound is set
There are three places a sound can come from, and the most specific one wins:
- A threshold variation's Sound - used only when the event is big enough to reach that variation.
- The event's own Sound, under Per-event settings.
- Default sound, under Sound in the widget's settings - the fallback for every event.
An empty field falls through to the next one down. Leave all three empty and that alert plays silently, which is a legitimate choice for follows on a big channel.
The built-in library
Every sound field offers four tabs: None, Built in, Upload and Link. The twelve built-in sounds are generated in the browser rather than downloaded, so there is no licence to worry about, nothing stored against your quota, and no silent first alert while an mp3 arrives.
- Chime - two soft bell-like tones, the second a beat behind the first.
- Ding - one bright tone.
- Bell - three stacked tones with a long ring.
- Pop - one short, low blip.
- Blip - two quick clicks, rising.
- Coin - the two-note arcade coin pickup.
- Arcade - a four-note run up.
- Success - a three-note major chime.
- Sparkle - three high, quiet tones climbing.
- Swoosh - one low note that decays away.
- Drum - a single deep thud.
- Alarm - three alternating beeps.
Switching an empty field to Built in selects Chime. Nothing plays on its own - the play button beside the picker is how you hear whatever is selected.
Upload your own
- Open any sound field and choose Upload.
- Pick a file. The picker accepts MP3, OGG, WAV and WebM audio. Anything else is refused with Use an MP3, OGG, WAV, WebM or MP4 file.
- Use the play button to hear it, or the bin to clear the field.
The upload limits
- 512 KB per audio file. Go over and the upload is refused, with the limit named in the message.
- 4 MB per video file, for the places pulz takes a clip rather than a sound.
- 20 MB in total, across everything you have uploaded.
- 40 files in total.
The last two are per creator and counted across audio and video together. Hit either and the upload is refused with You have filled your media storage. Delete a file to upload another.
Using a link
Choose Link, paste the URL, then click Use link. It has to start with https:// - anything else is refused with Links need to start with https://. A link costs nothing against your storage, so it is the way round the 512 KB cap for anything longer.
Volume
Volume under Sound runs from 0 to 100 in steps of 5 and starts at 70. It applies to everything alike - built-ins, uploads and links.
The preview buttons in the editor always play at 70 regardless of what you set, so judge the real level from the browser source, not from the sidebar.
Reading messages aloud
Read messages aloud sits under Sound and is off by default. It uses your browser's own speech engine - no server, no cost, and nothing leaves the machine running the source.
- It reads cheers and tips only. A resub message or a redemption's text is never spoken.
- It only speaks when the event actually carries a message.
- Turning it on reveals Only read tips and cheers above. Anything under that number is skipped.
- Speech is cancelled the moment the next alert starts, so a long message never talks over the alert behind it.
- The voice is whichever one the machine running the browser source has installed. pulz does not choose it.
FAQ
Can each event have a different sound?
Yes. Open the event under Per-event settings and set its own Sound. It overrides the widget's default for that event only.
Why is the preview silent until I click something?
Browsers refuse to start audio before you have interacted with the page. pulz resumes the audio engine as soon as it is allowed to, so click once anywhere in the editor and previews work from then on.
Does a built-in sound use my storage?
No. Only uploads count toward the 20 MB and 40 file limits. Built-ins and links use none of it.
Where do uploaded files live?
In pulz's own media store, served back to your browser source from a /m/ address. The owner is encoded in the file's name, so nobody else can delete it.
