Alert text and tokens

By the end of this you can write your own line for every alert type and know exactly what each token will put on screen.

Per-event settings

Everything in this article lives in the alert widget's settings, under Events, in the Per-event settings list. Nine events, each collapsed until you open it, each with its own copy, art, sound, accent and thresholds.

  • New follower
  • New subscriber
  • Resub - carries the month count and the streak.
  • Gifted subs - a gift bomb fires once, not once per sub.
  • Cheer
  • Raid
  • Channel point redemption
  • Tip or donation
  • Hype train

The checkbox on each row is that event's Enabled switch. Turn it off and the event never fires an alert; everything else keeps working.

What one event can override

  • Text - your line, up to 140 characters. Leave it empty and pulz writes the line.
  • Image or GIF - upload a file, or paste an https link (a Giphy or Tenor link is cheaper for everyone than re-hosting the animation).
  • Sound - see Alert sounds.
  • Accent - a colour for this event alone. Empty follows the widget's accent, which follows your page theme.
  • Only above - ignore anything smaller. A cheer or tip under this number fires nothing at all.
  • Bigger versions - up to five threshold variations. See Threshold variations.

What pulz writes when Text is empty

Leave Text empty and the alert draws the name on one line with a plain description under it. The wording is fixed, and it is the same wording the Event Feed uses, so a follow reads identically in both:

  • followed
  • subscribed
  • resubscribed for 12 months
  • gifted 5 subs, or gifted a sub for a single one
  • cheered 500 bits
  • raided with 42 viewers
  • redeemed Hydrate reminder, or redeemed a reward when the name is missing
  • tipped $25
  • reached level 3

Fill Text in and it replaces both lines with one line, so put the name back in yourself with %user%.

Event tokens

These come from the event that just happened. Drop them anywhere in a Text field, in any order, as many as you like.

  • %user% - who set it off. An anonymous cheer or gift bomb has no name, so it reads Anonymous. %user% just followed becomes pixeldrift just followed.
  • %amount% - the one number the event carries: bits cheered, subs in a gift bomb, viewers in a raid, months on a resub, a reward's cost in points, the level a hype train finished on, or the size of a tip. A follow and a first-time sub carry no number, so it comes out empty. %user% cheered %amount% bits becomes gigachad99 cheered 500 bits.
  • %tier% - Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 or Prime on a sub, resub or gift. On a tip it holds the currency symbol instead. %user% went %tier% becomes night_owl went Tier 1; %user% tipped %tier%%amount% becomes anon_tipper tipped $25.
  • %months% - total months subscribed, on a resub. %user% has been here %months% months becomes lofilena has been here 12 months.
  • %streak% - consecutive months with no gap, on a resub. %streak% months in a row becomes 4 months in a row.
  • %message% - the viewer's own words. %user%: %message% becomes gigachad99: Let's go!
  • %reward% - the channel point reward's name. %user% redeemed %reward% becomes clip_it redeemed Hydrate reminder.

Your own tokens

These come from your pulz profile and are always available in an alert.

  • %name% - your display name, or your username when you have not set one. Welcome to %name%'s stream.
  • %handle% - your username with an @ in front. Clip it and tag %handle%.

Stat tokens

Two stat tokens resolve inside an alert, and only when the same scene also holds a widget that reads your live stats - a Goal Bar, Stream Stats, Uptime, Counter, Ad Break or Stream Recap. The Alerts widget does not ask for that feed on its own, so on a scene with none of those they come out empty.

  • %followers% - your follower total. %user% is follower number %followers%.
  • %subs% - your subscriber total. Needs the Subscribers permission; without it, empty. That is %subs% subs and counting.

The same tokens elsewhere

Alert copy is not the only place this vocabulary works. A text layer on a scene, a welcome message and the Shoutout widget's heading all run through the same substitution. What each one can fill differs, though. A text layer has no event behind it, so it gets your own tokens and the stat tokens and nothing else. A welcome message adds %user%. The Shoutout heading adds %user% and %amount%.

FAQ

How long can an alert line be?

140 characters, per event and per threshold variation. That is the raw text you type, before any token expands.

Do tokens work in the image or sound fields?

No. Only Text is run through the token substitution. An image or sound is chosen per event and per threshold, not per viewer.

What happens to a token that has no value?

It vanishes and the rest of the line closes up, which is why %user% cheered %amount% bits on an event with no number reads awkwardly. Put the number-carrying tokens in threshold variations, where you know a number exists.

Can I write a different line for a big cheer?

Yes, that is exactly what threshold variations are for.

Make a bigger cheer look bigger

Thresholds give one event up to six different alerts.
